ASüren eylem mi, tamamlanmış olay mı?
Past simple (did) geçmişte başlayıp bitmiş olayı, past continuous (was doing) ise o sırada sürmekte olan eylemi anlatır.

Bwhen: araya giren olay
Uzun süren bir eylemin ortasında kısa bir olay olursa, uzun eylem was / were + -ing, kısa olay past simple olur.

CArt arda olaylar: iki past simple
İki eylem sırayla olduysa (biri bitti, sonra öbürü başladı) ikisi de past simple olur. Bu durumda "when" = "-ınca / -dikten hemen sonra".

YÖKDİL ipucuAnlam farkına dikkat: "When the doctor arrived, the patient died" (doktor geldi, sonra hasta öldü) ↔ "… the patient was dying" (doktor geldiğinde hasta ölmek üzereydi).
DYÖKDİL'de: as, just as, at the time
as ve just as da "-ken / tam -ken" anlamında kullanılır; çoğu zaman süren eylemle birlikte gelir.

YÖKDİL ipucuSeçeneklerde "was …ing / V2" ikilisi varsa önce hangi eylemin uzun, hangisinin kısa olduğuna bakın. "by the time" ise "had done" ile kullanılır (ileriki ünitelerde).
