İkisi de present perfect ile kullanılır ama farklı bilgi verir: for bir süre, since bir başlangıç noktası.

ago "şu andan … önce" anlamındadır, sürenin arkasına gelir ve past simple ile kullanılır.

DIt's … since ve akademik eş anlamlılar
"… -den bu yana … geçti" demek için It's (= It has been) + süre + since + past simple kullanılır. Bilimsel metinlerde since ve for yerine başka ifadeler de görülür.
