Alexander Fleming was born in 1881 on a farm in Scotland. When he was thirteen, he moved to London to live with his brother. Later, he studied medicine and became a doctor in 1906. During the First World War, he worked in army hospitals in France. There, he saw many soldiers die because of infected wounds.

In 1928, Fleming went on holiday and left some dishes of bacteria in his laboratory. When he came back, he found a blue-green mould on one of the dishes. Around the mould, there were no bacteria. The mould made a substance that killed bacteria, and Fleming called it penicillin. Later, other scientists made penicillin into a medicine for people. In 1945, Fleming won the Nobel Prize with two of these scientists. He died in London in 1955, at the age of 73.
