Blood Tests in a Hospital Laboratory

Every day, doctors send hundreds of blood samples to the hospital laboratory. Laboratory technicians test these samples with microscopes and machines. A machine counts the red and white blood cells in each sample. Red blood cells carry oxygen to all parts of the body, but white blood cells fight germs. When a person has an infection, the number of white blood cells usually goes up. Technicians do not decide on the treatment, because this is the doctor's job. They send the results to the doctor, and the doctor explains them to the patient.
Does a blood test take a long time? Usually, it does not. Most results are ready in a few hours, so patients do not wait for days. However, some special tests need more time, because the technicians grow bacteria from the sample.
