Cappadocia is a region in the centre of Turkey. Many people think that rain and wind made its strange rocks, but this is only part of the story. Millions of years ago, volcanoes such as Mount Erciyes covered the area with thick layers of ash. Over time, the ash became a soft rock called tuff. Tuff is light and easy to cut.

Rain, wind and rivers slowly wore away the soft tuff. Some pieces of harder rock stayed on top and protected the tuff under them. That's why the area has tall rocks with caps, called fairy chimneys. People also carved houses and churches into the soft rock. Today, tourists can visit these places and fly over the valleys in hot-air balloons.
