Gregor Mendel was born in 1822 in a small village in today's Czech Republic. His family were poor farmers, and he often worked in the garden as a boy. In 1843, he became a monk at an abbey in the city of Brno. Later, the abbey sent him to the University of Vienna to study science. After he came back, he started a long experiment with pea plants in the abbey garden.

From 1856 to 1863, Mendel grew thousands of pea plants and studied their seeds and flowers. He saw that features like flower colour pass from parent plants to new plants in clear patterns. He published his results in 1866, but very few scientists understood them. In 1868, he became the head of the abbey, so he had less time for science. Mendel died in 1884, and nobody knew how important his work was. In 1900, three scientists found his paper, and today we call him the father of genetics.
