Rosalind Franklin was born in London in 1920. She was a clever girl, and she loved science and mathematics at school. She studied chemistry at Cambridge University and finished in 1941. In 1951, she started to work at King's College in London. There, she used X-rays to take pictures of DNA. In 1952, her team took a very clear picture called Photo 51.

The picture showed that DNA has the shape of a spiral. Another scientist showed Photo 51 to James Watson without Franklin's permission. Watson and Francis Crick used it to build their famous model of DNA in 1953. Franklin died of cancer in 1958, when she was only 37. Four years later, Watson, Crick and Maurice Wilkins won the Nobel Prize. The Nobel Prize is only for living people, so Franklin did not get a share of it.
